An adorable photo showing how even male lions enjoy the company of their pride-mates. Including the rascal cubs!
The total lion population in Africa is thought to be only 15-20,000 individuals, a decline of more than 40% in the past 20 years. They occupy just 8% of their historical range and are now found only in the south Sahara desert and in parts of southern and eastern Africa.
Lion prides typically consist of about 15 related females and young males. 1-3 males will join the pride, staying for about 3 years or until another group of males takes over. Lions within a pride are affectionate and enjoy lots of touching, head rubbing, grooming and vocalizing. Unfortunately, many of these characteristics also make lion cubs victims of the deplorable cub-petting industry.
